CETINJE | Lovcen National Park: Climbing to Montenegrin History

Lovcen National Park in Montenegro is a stunning mix of greenery and crisp mountain air. The mild temperatures make it an ideal time to explore. Our journey began at Splendid Conference and Spa Resort, where my friend picked me up in a rented car. With the M2.3 route planned, we set off towards the park, making few stops at scenic vantage points.

The drive itself became part of the adventure, with each stop revealing sweeping views of the Montenegrin landscape. A roadside stop revealed a striking contrast between the rugged terrain and the distant Adriatic Sea.

As we approached Lovcen National Park, we passed through the historical city of Cetinje. Cetinje, Montenegro’s historic and cultural hub, boasts old royal palaces and a rich heritage. Although we didn’t stop to explore the city, it was impossible not to appreciate its charm as we passed through. Shortly after, we reached the entrance to the national park, where we paid the €3 fee per person. Towering trees lined the path, and sharp turns signaled our entry into this protected natural haven.

The road that led deeper into Lovćen National Park was winding, and with each turn, it offered even more breathtaking views. Spanning 62 square kilometers, the park is home to diverse flora and fauna, drawing nature lovers and hikers alike. As we ventured deeper into the park, its peacefulness gradually revealed why both locals and tourists hold it in high regard.

Reaching the mausoleum required climbing 461 steps, each one a reminder of the altitude. Upon arrival, we paid the €8 fee, then proceeded to make our way up. The effort was worthwhile. The mausoleum itself, an impressive granite structure, is perched atop Jezerski Vrh, Lovćen’s second-highest peak at 1,657 meters. Designed by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović and completed in 1974, it features two imposing granite caryatids guarding the entrance, symbolizing Montenegrin women in traditional attire. Inside, a 28-ton black granite statue of Njegoš rests beneath a golden mosaic canopy, further enhancing the solemn yet awe-inspiring atmosphere.

Vladika Restaurant

After completing our climb, hunger set in, so we headed to Vladika Restaurant, located just below the mausoleum stairs. A cozy spot known for its traditional Montenegrin dishes. The restaurant, nestled among towering pine trees, reminded me of Baguio City. Its outdoor dining area offered sweeping views of the mountains, enhancing the peaceful atmosphere. I ordered beef kebab, served with fresh vegetable salads. The meat was tender and flavorful, while the vegetables balanced the richness of the dish. The combination of fresh mountain air and a satisfying meal made the experience even more enjoyable.

Serpentine Road

As the afternoon faded, we took a different route back to the resort, choosing the famous Serpentine Road. This narrow, twisting stretch of asphalt is known for its 25 sharp turns, each one revealing another stunning angle of Kotor Bay. The drive was thrilling—each curve brought a mix of excitement and caution as the road hugged the cliffs. Though slightly nerve-wracking, the panoramic views of the bay and surrounding mountains made it an unforgettable part of the journey.

As we returned to Splendid Conference and Spa Resort, the day’s experiences replayed in my mind. From the heights of Lovcen National Park to the winding descent through the Serpentine Road, the trip was a perfect mix of nature, culture, and adventure. For travelers seeking breathtaking landscapes and a deeper understanding of Montenegro, Lovcen National Park is a destination worth experiencing.
