Biliran is always being considered as part of Leyte province but in fact it became an independent province in 1992. The province is famous for of its natural attractions from astonishing waterfalls and stunning islands. On my first visit to Eastern Visayas, I made sure that the province is included on my Leyte itinerary.
With the goal of spending some nights camping in the famous islands of Eastern Visayas: Sambawan and Kalanggaman, we were able to enjoy our five-day stay in the region. There are other routes to take for travelers to explore the region but the most feasible Tacloban, Biliran, Palompon and back to Tacloban route was taken here. So here’s an itinerary, travel guide, and sample expenses.

WHERE TO EAT
Tacloban City has a lot to offer when it comes to dining. The whole stretch of Burgos Street and adjacent roads suggest affordable places to eat. During our stay in the city, we were able to try several restaurants from seafood, Mexican, burger, comfort foods, desserts, and coffee shops. Here’s a food guide in Tacloban City. For the overnight campings, of course you need to buy food supply at the nearby market before heading to the island.
WHERE TO STAY
In Naval, Biliran, we stayed at TJ pension house and availed our room for Php1000. The room has 2 beds and an additional pull-out bed. The lodging inn offers free mineral water and hot water anytime of the day.
Tacloban City has a numerous hotels to choose from. One of them is Ironwood Hotel, a newly opened hotel in the city which is located along Burgos Street and is accessible to Tacloban’s famous restaurants. Just across the road is Yellow Door Hostel, an old house turned into a backpacker accommodation.

Ang saya! Very detailed! Galing! Galing!
Hi RJ! Thanks for this travel guide! Very informative and helpful! two thumbs up! 🙂
Hi RJ! Do you know the schedule of van from Naval to Libongao and Libongao to Palompon? Thank you!
For the Naval – Libongao, I think the van leaves when it’s full. For the Libongao to Palompom, we were just lucky that a van passed by minutes after we got down the van from Naval and heading to Palompon.
Hi sir.. Ask ko lang po kung meron talagang vans going to palompon sa Libongao. Same Itinerary po kasi gagawin namin this comming nov. Sambawan Island then where going to Kalanggaman. Hope for your reply. Kudos to your blog, very helpful. Thanks 🙂
Hi RJ, Do yuo know how we can get to Sambawan and Kalanggaman fro Siargao? Thanks!~
The only way I know is to take a flight to Cebu, then a fast craft to Ormoc City, Leyte. Or from Cebu, book flights either to Ormoc or Tacloban, then take a van to Naval, Biliran (for Sambawan) or Palompon (for Kalanggaman).
Hi RJ! Do we need to make reservations first with Palompon Municipal prior to going to Kalanggaman Island? Thanks.
Hi Genilyn, it is recommended since it’s summer and a lot of local tourists are expected to visit the island.
Hello, yung vans po ba going to San Juanico Bridge, saan po yung terminal? Or is it just along the way?
