Ratchathewi BTS Station was the station I pinned on my Google map as the nearest one to my hostel. Few minutes from the station, on an unobtrusive compound, is Bed Station Hostel. The modern industrial design of the hostel is very clear on its façade with the metal and wood interplay. There are several chairs in-front of the hostel that are usually occupied by travelers having a cig.
It was just around noon but the staff were friendly enough to entertain me and ask for my needs. They allowed me to use the luggage storage and even offered me the free and overflowing coffee, tea, and biscuits. A staff also asked me if I wanted to take a shower by informing me about the common showers on the 4th floor.
The hostel’s reception is on the ground floor, next to a lounge where a massive teddy bear, wearing a Bed Station Hostel shirt, comfortably resides. The floor, all floors actually, has red brick walls that blend perfectly with the cozy mood. Other areas on the ground floor include a long wooden table, a sink, fridge, and café and bar counter for availing some food and beverages.
Accessible via stairs is the mezzanine offering more spaces for travelers to lounge and meet other travelers after a long day of exploring Bangkok attractions. Bean bags, shelves with varied book and DVD genres, PlayStation, and few computers are free on first-come-first-served basis. WiFi connection are free in the hostel from the lobby up to the rooms on the upper floors. The hostel has stairs up to the last floor but elevator is also available.
BED STATION HOSTEL ROOM TYPES
Bed Station Hostel has four room types: private (good for 2), and bed-bunk dorms for 4, 6, and 8 persons. I was able to snatch a bed in a 6-bed mixed dorm room at 550THB that includes breakfast. Beds in 8-dorm rooms are cheaper than beds in 4 or 6-beds dorm room, around 100THB difference.
If meeting free-spirited travelers is not your thing, the rooms are great for some lone time and rest. Thick mattress covered with clean sheets, has a pillow and duvet, a small shelf for your stuff, own light source, and universal plugs are in-room amenities. Each bunk also has its own curtain for an undisturbed sleep and privacy of travelers.
In addition is your own locker that is large enough to fit a backpack that is 40L and above but be sure to bring your own lock. If you forgot to bring a lock, you can rent one from the reception. Electronic keycard access is also employed in all rooms of the hostel. Fresh towels are being rented for a non-refundable fee of 20THB, which is good for your entire stay.
Breakfast is minimal yet already satisfying to start a day in Bangkok. Cereals, breads, and spreads plus brewed coffee and tea are available from 6AM to 10AM. If for some reasons you’re still enjoying the comforts of your bed, don’t worry as overflowing coffee, tea, and biscuits are available all-day.
The whole fourth floor of the hostel is only for the toilet and shower, separate for women and gents. For the gents, there are two toilet cubicles and few urinals and six shower rooms covered with frosted glass doors. Shower amenities include shampoo, shower gel, and hair dryers.
LAUNDRY AND DRYING FACILITIES
When you’re on a long-term travel, doing your own laundry is a lot cheaper than availing laundry services. Bed Station Hostel has coin-operated washers and dryers for their guests. Laundry is 40THB for a maximum of 10 kilograms of clothes while the dryer accepts 10THB for 10 minutes. For 80THB, my clothes went from stinky to fresh in just an hour, really convenient if you have limited time to do your laundry on your trip.
Apart from all the facilities and amenities that Bed Station Hostel offers to its guests, the service that the staff extends to every travel was really remarkable. They can help you with surviving the streets of Bangkok, Thailand with its somehow complex yet convenient transportation network, suggest must-try places to enjoy Thai cuisine, and shopping tips. The location of the hostel is also a great spot and accessible to the BTS, river ferry stations, 24-hr convenience stores, and food hubs. Definitely a must-place to stay in Bangkok away from the muddled Khao San Road.
