MANILA | Into the Deep of Manila Ocean Park

Water is one of the classical elements in Greek philosophy often associated with the qualities of intuition and emotion in esoteric tradition. Approximately 72% of the planet’s surface is covered by water that is mainly divided into several principal oceans. Oceans are full of life. And to display this magnificent view underwater, the Manila Ocean Park has its attraction Oceanarium.

Oceanarium is one of the attractions at the Manila Ocean Park. Be fascinated by the wonders of the sea and a breath-taking marine life exhibit. You can discover over 5,000 varieties of marine creatures from around 300 species, all indigenous to the Philippines and the Southeast Asia. You can also walk through Asia’s largest underwater viewing tunnel, stretching 25 meters long and curved at 220 degrees, and witness how different reef fishes interact with each other.

The Oceanarium is divided into 7 sections:

AGOS (Flow). This section showcases a rainforest with 8 tanks of freshwater fishes.

LONGHORN COWFISH. Also known as “Baka-baka” or “Tabarong” with maximum length of 25cm (10in) and a lifespan of 8 years.

STRIPED PUFFER/MANILA PUFFER. Also known as “Butete” (Arothron manilensis) with maximum length of 31cm and a lifespan of 10 years.

PAJAMA CARDINALFISH. Also known as “Dangat” or “Suga” (Sphaeramia nematoptera) which can grow in a maximum length of 8.5cm (3.35in).

SEALE’S CARDINALFISH (Apogon sealei) that can grow to a maximum length of 10cm (4in).

STRIPED EEL CATFISH. Also known as “Ito/Kanduli” (Plotosus lineatus) with maximum length of 32cm and a lifespan of 7 years.

SNOWFLAKE MORAY EEL (Echidna nebulosa). Also known as “Igat” or “Payangitan” grows at maximum length of 1m (3.3ft) with a lifespan of 15-20 years.

CONVICT BLENNY (Pholidichthys leucotaenia). Can grow to a maximum length of 34cm (13in) with a lifespan of 3-10 years.

CLOWN TRIGGERFISH (Balistoides conspicillum). Also known as “Pakol” grows at maximum length of 50cm (1.6ft).

DOUBLE TOOTH SOLDIERFISH (Myripristis hexagona). Also known as “Baga-baga” grows at a maximum length of 30cm (1ft) and fed on plankton.

SPOTTED GARDEN EEL (Heteroconger hassi). Also known as “Edong” grows at a maximum length of 40cm (1.3ft) also fed on plankton.

GOLDEN STRIPED SOAPFISH (Grammistes sexlineatus). Can grow at a max length of 30cm (1ft).

LAOT (Fishing Ground). Features big fish and Eagle-spotted rays in a long tank.

BUHAY NA KARAGATAN (Living Ocean).  It is the main attraction of the oceanarium which is 25-metre long walkway tunnel with 220-degree curved acrylic walls similarly seen in Ocean Park Hong Kong, Underwater World in Singapore, Siam Ocean World in Bangkok, Thailand and Aquaria KLCC in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The difference between MOP’s is a 220-degree curved tunnel as compared to the standard 180-degree curved tunnels seen in other Asian countries.
